John Barone is a commodity analyst and President of Market Vision, Inc. He is an active speaker, presenter and educator within the foodservice industry. His focus on macroeconomics has helped restaurateurs understand the new and dramatic global forces that are driving commodity prices – and helped them recognize the need to reformulate supply chain approaches and risk management solutions.

John specializes in “connecting the dots” – distilling complex economic, market and commodity data down to actionable information and presentations for supply chain executives, management, franchise operators and restaurant investors.

He is known industry-wide for the Market Vision Spring and Fall Conferences, now 30 years running. Through the conferences, it has been John’s goal to foster and build a “community” for restaurant supply chain VPs, directors and category managers. And, the conferences have successfully achieved “don’t miss” status for hundreds of chain restaurant executives and their suppliers.

John sits on the advisory board for the National Restaurant Association’s Supply Chain Management Study Group. Starting in 2012, the NRA supply chain group partnered with Market Vision to run their fall supply chain meeting in conjunction with Market Vision’s Fall Conference in Orlando.

John holds a BA in Mathematics and an MBA in Quantitative Analysis from Rutgers University. Market Vision’s services directly reflect John’s training and intuitive strengths in research, statistics, forecasting and analysis.

Personally, John is now retired from 18 years of coaching travel soccer and basketball. Forced to give up running due to knee problems, he is now an avid cyclist and mountain biker – and can usually be persuaded to play a round of golf.

David Weaber joined Terrain in July 2022 as Senior Research Analyst - Animal Protein. He provides Farm Credit System partners, bank clients, and prospects with analysis and insights into the animal protein supply chain.  

Prior to joining Terrain, he was Vice-President at Express Markets, Inc. where he assisted their varied clients with analysis in the meat supply chain sector and managed the EMI staff. Before his role at Express Markets, he was an economist leading the market insights team in the strategic sourcing and supply chain analytics group of Delhaize America. Earlier, he was Director of Market Analysis at Swift & Co., and worked as Director of Research and Special Projects at Cattle-Fax.

He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal science from Colorado State University.

Betty Berning is HighGround’s Contributing Dairy Economist, providing commentary on the domestic dairy markets. 

Betty has extensive experience in the agricultural supply chain and has held a wide variety of roles, including Senior Dairy Buyer at General Mills, Loan Officer at Farm Credit, Extension Educator at the University of Minnesota, and has worked on her family's dairy farm in Central Minnesota. These experiences have enabled her to understand farmers' challenges and the decision-making processes of food companies and consumers. 

Her passion is writing, teaching, and presenting on dairy to interested audiences everywhere, including her three sons, who regularly ask her about the butter markets!

Brian Williams leads the Agricultural Risk Management Desk at Macquarie (Australia's largest Investment Bank), providing Commercial End-Users, Producers and the Hedge Fund Community with specialized Risk Management strategies in the Grains & Oilseed sector.

In his 21st year on the banking side of Wall Street, Brian utilizes long-term Fundamentals alongside technically assisted trading strategies to project better price entry into markets. His objective is to mitigate risk and find price value within the ever changing Fundamentals of Supply/Demand, Weather and Government Intervention.

Brian's footprint encompasses a large portion of the U.S. Poultry Industry as well as the Ethanol Industry, Fortune 500 Food Processors and some prominent Hedge Funds. His career has spanned the likes of UBS, Prudential and Jefferies, prior to joining Macquarie in the summer of 2015 as a Director of Macquarie Futures. Brian received his B.S. in Finance from Villanova University.

Jay is currently Vice President of Express Markets, Inc. (EMI). He leads his staff in providing clients with price discovery and analytics for the protein markets. 

Before this role, he was the Senior Director of Further Processing and Prepared Foods at Agri Stats, helping benchmark client performance and improve their processes. Prior to the last seven years at EMI and Agri Stats, Jay held several key sales and management roles over twenty-three years at Gold’n Plump, GEA/CFS, Wayne Farms LLC, Townsend Poultry, and Wampler Longacre Rockingham (WLR) Foods.

Jay has received his Master’s degree from Brenau University and his Bachelor’s in Accounting from Shippensburg University.
